The Prime Minister has expanded the Future High Streets Fund, confirming that another 50 towns in England will be given a share of £1 billion to re-energise their high streets.

For investment in Bolton Town Centre, the Prime Minister and the Communities Secretary have invited Bolton Council to develop a plan for how it will spend its share of £1 billion.

This additional funding is part of the Prime Minister’s £3.6 billion Towns Fund announced last month which will ensure that towns are getting the improved transport and the improved broadband connectivity that they need to boost local growth and create more jobs.

Commenting, local MP Chris Green said: “I am delighted that Bolton Town Centre will receive a share in the £1 billion, and that Bolton Council can develop proposals that will genuinely keep the high street at the beating heart of the community.”

“With our towns and high streets facing challenges, Boris Johnson and the Conservatives will re-energise these communities, empowering local leaders to help transform their high streets and town centres.”

The Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “Our high streets are right at the heart of our communities, and I will do everything I can to make sure they remain vibrant places where people want to go, meet and spend their money.

“But with our town centres facing challenges, we’re today expanding the High Streets Fund to support over 100 high streets to regenerate – backed by £1 billion of vital investment.

“This scheme is going to re-energise and transform even more of our high streets – helping them to attract new businesses, boost local growth, and create new infrastructure and jobs.”

Investing in our high streets and backing business

Thanks to our balanced approach to the economy we can invest in our high streets and town centres. That’s why I’m working with the new Conservative council and local residents to regenerate Horwich and Westhoughton town centres and I’ll push Wigan Council to improve Atherton. Speech in Parliament - 30th December 2020

One concern that I share with the hon. Member for Birmingham, Selly Oak (Steve McCabe) is about the certainty and clarity of the tiering system and what can be seen as a slightly erratic aspect of that.
