Chris Green MP has welcomed news that 1.929 young people here in Bolton have taken part in National Citizen Service – as the Prime Minister announces a new scheme to get more teachers volunteering to help young people on the scheme.
NCS is a once in a lifetime opportunity open to all 16-and 17-year olds across England. It is a unique 4 week full-time programme, including 30 hours committed to a community project, focused on fun and discovery that benefits both young people and society. Participants build skills for work and life, while taking on new challenges and adventures, learning new skills, making new friends and contributing to their community.
The Prime Minister has announced a new partnership between National Citizen Service (NCS) and Teach First. Teach First, which this year recruited almost 1,700 top graduates, will set an aspiration for all of its teachers to volunteer for NCS, generating thousands of hours of additional support for participants. These Teachers will have a range of ways to take part, from leading NCS participants on an outward bound week to mentoring them as they make a real difference in their local communities. The partnership, which will begin immediately, will also create a new network of NCS ambassadors in schools, as members of the Teach First community encourage thousands more young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to take up their offer of a guaranteed place on NCS.
Commenting, Chris said:
‘National Citizen Service is a fantastic opportunity for young people from different backgrounds to come together to gain life skills and give something back to their local community.
‘NCS is helping promote a more responsible and engaged society by giving young people a life changing rite of passage experience, and it is great news that nearly 2,000 young people in Bolton have now taken part in it.
‘NCS is part of our One Nation approach to government, helping to promote a more cohesive society by giving young people the opportunity to mix with people from a variety of backgrounds.’
